You were all heroes. Being on the front line must have been so frightening in the beginning but you all soldiered on. There were so many health workers that didn't make it through. Thank you for all you did and continue to do.

As a volunteer in the A&E department of a very busy city hospital, I see a lot of staff interaction with patients. I see the care and concern of so many, from the paramedics, to the healthcare assistants, the nurses and the doctors. Many of whom have an absolutely fantastic bed-side manner. Even at the end of their 12 and 1/2 hour shift. I also see a depleted reception desk in urgent treatment, coping with queues of people wanting to book in whilst necessarily giving priority to the ambulances flocking in. And to answering the many, many queries each shift of ‘how much longer do I have to wait?’ (To which there is no definite answer as it is impossible say how long a doctor may need to spend with each patient). I also see the cleaning staff trying to do their best in overcrowded areas, also being super helpful when they are asked the way by a patient or visitor. Also the catering department trying to marry up meals with patients in the A&E corridor, where the beds are constantly being moved around! I also consider the laundry staff as there is never any shortage of laundry heading their way, much of it soiled. So to consider that many of these wonderful kind and patient nhs staff do work such long, long shifts (which I don’t think I could ever have done), I think they are absolutely WONDERFUL. To all those on the front line and all those working behind the scenes, THANK YOU for doing what you do and for working for the NHS.
